Boxer Johnny Tapia: Sentenced to Reality TV Show for Cocaine Charges

leave a comment »

Professional Boxer Johnny Tapia was recently sentenced by District Judge, Kenneth Martinez in a New Mexico courthouse to nine days in county jail, a six-moth stay in an intensive rehab facility, and three weeks on VH1’s reality TV show “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.” Yeah, that’s right. As part of the sentence, Johnny Tapia must head to Hollywood to appear on the reality TV show that focuses on celebrities and their rehabilitation process.

Tapia’s troubles stem from previous cocaine charges related to a near-fatal overdose that landed him an 18 month probation sentence he was serving from 2008. However, Tapia’s probation officer was tipped early this year that he was using cocaine again, and sure enough, Tapia admitted to violating his probation and is now facing the consequences of his cocaine charges. Violating probation could have meant more than a year in prison for Tapia.

Johnny Tapia has won five world titles over the years, fighting some of the best in his weightless like Danny Romero, Paulie Ayala, Jorge Barrera and Frankie Archuleta. When asked about his up incoming May appearance on VH1’s reality TV show “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew” and his general sentence, Tapia had this to say, “They’re taking me to prison. I did the crime, I’ll do the time.”
